Summer School 2023

You are warmly invited to Region 6 Summer School, June 25-29 at Cal State Los Angeles. The conference will convene at 4p.m. on Sunday, June 25th, and end at 5p.m. on Thursday, June 29th. It is open to all members. Summer School will be an opportunity to come together with members from across the Region for a week of deep-dive trainings on core activities, focused skill-building workshops, and collaborative strategizing to grow power and participation in our Locals, campaigns, and Region 6 as a whole. The conference structure and content has been developed through extensive discussion with Locals and members about upcoming needs and interest areas and is intended to be as productive and applicable to your participation in the Union as possible. Locals are encouraged to determine their delegates based on clear goals for what each person can get out of the conference and bring back to their work in your Local or campaign.

Structure and Classes

Each delegate will go through a three-day class that will meet on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning. These classes will be an opportunity to develop deeper skills and knowledge on core union functions. Delegates should be signed up for their specific class during registration.

  • Grievance Handling: Target audience - grievance handlers and members who are new to contract enforcement.
  • Collective Bargaining - Negotiations Deep Dive: Target audience - Bargaining Committee members and anyone who will be involved in negotiations.
  • Building a Contract Campaign and Strike Readiness Plan: Target audience - Bargaining Committee members, Organizing Committee members, Community Services Committee members, members who will be involved in bargaining in the next year.
  • Building a Strong Internal Organizing Program 1.0: Target audience - Locals who do not have an existing 1-to-1/Member-to-Member program and members who are new to 1-1 organizing.
  • Building a Strong Internal Organizing Program 2.0: Target audience - Members with some experience with 1-to-1 organizing and lead organizers.

Each afternoon delegates will participate in standalone workshops focused on targeted skills – including communications, leadership development, direct actions, strike preparedness, running effective meetings, and more.

On the final day of the conference, we will spend significant time in collaborative strategy sessions. These are intended as places for members to come together across sectors and geographies to set concrete action plans and coordination together for the coming months. Topics will include: regional coordination for bargaining and strike readiness; new organizing in higher ed, research, EVs, and aerospace; strategic political planning; Region 6 history and storytelling; political and community action for race, gender, immigrant, and disability justice; and more.

Delegates do not need to sign up in advance for workshops or strategy sessions. More information about specific offerings will be provided to registered delegates ahead of Summer School.

Finally, there will also be informal get-togethers most evenings, as well as many opportunities to connect with members from Locals and sectors across the region.

Lodging and Registration

We will have lodging in on campus apartments (double occupancy per room) at Cal State LA. Even if you live in the LA area, all participants are strongly encouraged to lodge on site. We have endeavored to keep costs as low as possible to make the conference as accessible as possible to Locals. Registration is $200 per delegate. This includes lodging, breakfast each day, and one reception dinner.

The link to register will be sent to Locals, and the registration deadline will be June 13. We will have limited room in our meeting and lodging space. Interested members should contact your Local.

If you have any questions, please contact Sam Sumpter at [email protected].

Looking forward to seeing you this Summer!
